How to Write Your First Post in WordPress

Writing pad and pencil This video is for people new to WordPress and goes through the steps to write and publish your first post.

Writing and publishing pages is the same except for two things:

You start on the ‘Add New Page’ screen (not the Add New Post screen)
You don’t assign categories and tags

Once you’ve written your post you should assign some basic SEO tags to give it a nudge in the search results, and I go through these steps here.

If you have difficulty viewing the video try the full screen mode – this content column is a bit narrow for displaying videos!

Hi Martin: A bit off topic, but when I 1st set up my blogs, I set the permalinks with the date and post name. Don’t ask me why. I wanted to change it to just the blog/post name option, but that messes up old links within posts. Someone told me about a plugin that will handle it, but I don’t like adding a bunch of plugins.

Is there a way to more easily change the permalink setting without having to manually go through an update all links within posts? Not really an option as I;ve been blogging for some time.

Hi Cathy,

The best way is to set up a 301 redirect in your .htaccess file.

There’s a great tool for creating the .htaccess file code. Click here, then scroll down to the section headed ‘Changing WordPress Permalink Structure’ and, below the screenshot, click the blue ‘Generate Redirects’ button.

On the page that comes up enter your details, click ‘Generate Redirect’ and paste the resulting code into your .htaccess file.

hi,
i have downloaded wordpress application.but it has not like standard windows installer.i read readme file and it said copy this-this-admin.php(or something like tht)into address bar of your browser.i dont understand all of this.plz help.any help would be highly appreciated.
