I think some of the reason that people think social networking doesn't work is that we see too many people that appear to use it exclusively for self-promotion. Social Media Marketing is in a way, investing in people. A company which does not have the time or would not wish to put in the effort, is not dealing with people anyway.

Yes – it can be time consuming, but then so is anything when you first get it going.

The trick is to find a few sites that fit with your target audience and work those. Trying to work too many social sites will drive you crazy.

I’m currently active in 3 sites and that works for me, both in my time investment and in the results I’m getting.

I just started using social media marketing and it seems to work fairly well. I know some colleagues who only use it and have success. I don’t think it is snake oil, but just like anything else in the beginning it takes take a good amount of work.

Ultimately what is required is you get genuine customers from the marketing tool you employ. Social marketing may result in some genuine customers for sure, but the process is so tedious and time-consuming, it can be counter-productive
