I wrote a post a while ago on how to upgrade your Wordpress blog in 10 minutes or less, using the Wordpress Auto Upgrade Plugin
All the details are here.
Having just upgraded to WP 2.5.1, I found a little wrinkle in one of the steps I wrote out previously: the database upgrade step.
For some reason when I closed the database upgrade window today (as per what I wrote last time) I got logged out of my admin screens. Exactly the same thing as happened when I clicked the ‘Continue’ link last time.
So I logged back in again and repeated the upgrade process from the start, this time clicking the Continue link at the end of the database upgrade. This time it took me to the front page of my blog. Hmmm – first time that’s happened..!
So I closed the tab that had opened for the database upgrade, and was now displaying my front page. Back in the upgrade process tab, I clicked the Next Step link, and the final steps followed through perfectly.
Not sure why that happens. But on both previous occasions that I’ve had this glitch when I’ve upgraded using this process, I’ve simply re-started the upgrade process from the beginning and it’s worked perfectly the second time around.
I’ve done 3 upgrades now using this plugin and on the one occasion where there was no need for a Database upgrade (2.3.2 to 2.3.3) I had no problems.
But still, even if you have to go through the process twice it’s still a heck of a lot quicker and easier than doing it manually!
And the lesson for me is this: be very sure to do full system and database backups, as I described last time, before you start the Auto Upgrade process! Just in case.
If I crack this the next time I do an upgrade I’ll post an update!
Update:
Because of the interest shown in this post I’ve put together a detailed guide on upgrading Wordpress.
My previous post covers only the actual upgrade process itself, using the auto-upgrade plugin.
This covers everything from discovering why it’s important to keep your Wordpress version up to date, through checking and upgrading your theme and plugins before you start, taking full backups of your blog database and system files, the upgrade process process itself (doing it both manually and using the plugin) and tidying and backing up afterwards.
It’s all set out in clear, simple, step-by-step language with screenshots where necessary.
