The post I wrote a few days ago on widgets in wordpress 2.8 received a lot of views, so I thought it may be helpful to make a video. So here it is – a video on managing widgets in WordPress 2.8.

As per one of your suggestions, I have a ‘test’ blog which I upgraded to 2.8 and not a lot seems to be working for me at all in admin. Example, if I click on any of the down arrows (any of them) nothing happens. In widgets, I can’t move them to the particular sidebar I want to edit and it is beginning to frustrate me that that is happening. One thing I am glad about is that I only upgraded to 2.8 on my test blog and not my other Wordpress blogs (I have to thank you for that). I am going to try and put some time aside today to work on try and figure out what is going on.

Gerri, hi,
That’s bad news – I’m sorry you’re having hassles.
WordPress have acknowledged that some problems exist with 2.8 and 2.8.1 is currently in Beta 2 release, so my guess is that the official release of 2.8.1 will be out in a week or so.
However, your theme could also be a cause of some of the problems. I don’t know what theme you’re using, but I use Thesis and they always issue updates when new WordPress releases come out so as to ensure compatibility.
One of the problems you’ve described (widgets) was a problem that the Thesis guys needed to address in the latest Thesis version because they didn’t work in the previous version with 2.8 – meaning that the widgets problem was a theme problem.
Unfortunately I’m not a coder (actually that should probably be ‘fortunately’
) so I don’t know what fixes they had to put in place – but it would be worth checking your theme for compatibility with WP 2.8.
I hope WP 2.8.1 and making sure your theme’s compatible will fix those problems!
Cheers,
Martin.
Martin, I thought I would stop by and let you know that it looks like I figured out what was making WP 2.8 act funny. It was one of the plugins I was using – WPMarketer. Since deactivating it, everything seems to be working fine.
