Google XML sitemaps by Arne Brachhold is for me the best sitemap generator for WP hands down. I have used a few sitemap alternatives for wordpress but none are as easy to use, stylish and well supported as this plugin. A must for every WP website out there.

Johnny, hi,

If you mean a 'human readable' sitemap then I don't believe it's necessary while your site is still small and you can let people find everything (particularly the important pages) through your menu bar and links in the sidebar. Once your site gets bigger then a human site map is definitely worth considering.

You can actually get a plugin for WordPress that takes care of generating a human readable sitemap: find it here.

That means you don't have to keep editing it manually.

Cheers,

Martin.

thanks for the tutorial
I have one question though
I am new to blogs and wordpress but it really isn't that hard and even quite exciting I must say. I'm 1month old in this and doing my learning in realtime on my mom's new B&B site.
I would like to know if a sitemap page on my website is really necessary for google or seo if you have the plugin taking care of it automatically. ?
I understood that the sitemap is primarily for the bots rather than for people checking out a sitemap page
I would like to cancel that page on the website also because I have to edit it and don't know how. I also found that I forgot a contact us page and I can't add another page without breaking the design. I got the theme built on elance and the navigation bar is set for so many pages.
thanks for your advice

Keith, hi,

You're welcome - and I've no idea why the developers don't do it..!

To be fair, some of them do - but definitely not all of them.

Cheers,

Martin.

Thanks Martin
I'm told that this plugin is one of the must have SEO plugins, but for some of us it's not easy to configure.
Thanks for taking the time to put this post together... why don't the plugin developers do it?

Joanna, hi,

I honestly don't know..! It's perfectly fine to set a priority at 1.0 - that would be the page-type you consider the most important on your site.

In the site maps I set up on my static sites I usually have my index (home) page as 1.0 and everything else falls under that. If not my index page, then whichever page I consider most important gets a 1.0.

I'll immediately go and correct my error :) (And thanks for letting me know!)

Cheers,

Martin.
