I’m Switching From Twitter to Facebook

in Internet Marketing

Facebook LogoIf you dropped into this site around a year ago you’ll have read that I was a big fan of Twitter for attracting readers.

But over the past year my love for Twitter has withered.

Why?

Firstly: The search function no is longer as effective as it was.

I used to search for people asking questions about WordPress, but these days the results often don’t even contain the word ‘WordPress’!

Secondly: The efficiency with which I’m able to use Twitter is therefore a lot less than it was.

There’s a lot of information flying around on Twitter and if you can’t filter it effectively it becomes a pretty inefficient way of finding the stuff you need.

For sometime I’ve known that I should be exploring Facebook as an alternative. But, frankly, I find Facebook to be one of the least intuitive systems I know!

None-the-less, a recent article by Darren Rowse on how to set up a Facebook page, which followed one on how he’s now driving traffic with Facebook have shamed me into action.

And I now have a Facebook page for this site.

It’s a brand new page – set up yesterday – and I’ve got about 2 Likes so far. So if you happen to hop over there feel absolutely free to ‘Like’ it too! :)

And if you have a Facebook page leave us its URL in a comment so we can reciprocate.

Cheers,

Martin Malden

Martin, I find advantages to both Twitter and Facebook. Facebook allows more discussion. On Twitter, I can meet new people, find technical information much more easily, and find people in my area that I wouldn’t otherwise meet.

Here’s my Facebook page:

At one point I used Twitter to gather names of anyone I could find in my geographical area (New Jersey). Some of them I have now met in person and network with regularly via Facebook.

Learn to use hashtags in Twitter to maximize who sees your tweets. Also, have you done any Twitter chats? Those are valuable for networking with anyone sharing your interests.

Hashtags – yes, that’s a good idea, I’ll take a look.

I’ve been using Twitter as a market research tool.

I did searches to find questions on WordPress and then wrote articles answering ones that were asked more frequently.

But for some months now the search function has been completely useless. Most of the search results don’t even contain ‘wordpress’, let alone filter the ones with a ‘?’ in as well..!

Thanks for the pointer,

Martin.

Hi Martin

I was never keen on facebook. Too many people (who you don’t know) wanting to be your friend lol. But I do think Facebook pages is a great idea for your business. I recently made a Facebook page for my partner’s photography website http://www.facebook.com/pages/Digital-Photography-Shots/114343978610249.

I agree with Leora, using hashtags on Twitter is very good for finding what you are lookin for.

Hi Maz,

I agree re all those people wanting to be your friend.

My original Facebook page is full of people (real people) who are friends, but who have no real interest in my work online.

Creating a Facebook page for this site seems to me a great way of separating the two.

I ‘Liked’ your page :)

Cheers,

Martin.

Thanks for this post. I really wander why I am not a social media addict.

I set up FB fan page, but I just leave it there. Sigh… What a boring life….

But anyway, I tried to overcome my weakness in using social media because I don’t usually a social person. Even in the real life, I don’t usually talked to any person whom I didn’t meet before because I am a shy person.

That’s why I took blogging to express myself. I guess I will now use facebook as one of my medium on expressing my thoughts and feelings. hehhehe…

Felix, hi,

Yes – you do need to socialise if you’re going to make social media work for you! :)

Just one of those things, I’m afraid,

If you have a page leave it in a comment and I’ll come across and ‘Like’ it – hopefully others will too.

Cheers,

Martin.

I’m sorry to hear that, but I cannot think of a more powerful way of getting the message across – thank you for sharing your experience.

I hope you’re able to recover your readership. You may want to try setting up a competition or something that will trigger your readers to return and then you can apply the lessons of the past.

Good luck with it, whatever you decide to do.

Cheers,

Martin.

Hi Ian,

Yes – all those social media sites take some learning..!

With my Facebook page I’ve been adding short comments as well as publishing my posts on it. The short comments simply refer to products I’ve found or things that occur to me – almost like Twitter tweets, but a bit longer. Or normal Facebook updates, but focused specifically on my business.

As with all things new, I got an initial rush of visitors which then dropped back (Seth Godin: The Dip) and is slowly starting to recover.

Cheers,

Martin.
