Ways to Overcome Unnecessary Fears of Failure

Text from my newsletter sent on 20th December

“..Failure is not the falling down, it’s the staying down..”

I had an entire range of fears when I started my business.

A couple of weeks ago I talked about my fear of failure, but what I didn’t talk about was the number of ways in which I feared I could fail, and how that affected my business.

An example: if I was pitching for a web design project and the potential customer asked me for something that I didn’t, at that point, know how to deliver, I was immediately afraid that I would not be able to do so.

So I would start humming and hawing, and giving myself ways out, before I had even won the business.

The result was predictable: I didn’t win the business.

It took me a while, a lot longer than it should have, to look at those requests as an opportunity to learn something new.

I’m still occasionally faced with requests that I don’t immediately know how to deliver (thankfully, less so now than before!) and I still get a momentary pause.

But I have trained myself to look on them as a way to expand my knowledge.

And they always are.

In fact, because I’ve taught myself to look at them as an opportunity to learn, I’m often able to come back with a better solution than the customer originally asked for.

My fear of not being able to deliver the customer’s request was an unnecessary fear. It’s the type of fear that holds us back from achieving what we’re capable of.

It’s a fear that’s manufactured by our minds, puts us into a ‘flee’, not a ‘fight’ mindset, and stifles our growth.

It’s quite different from a necessary fear (the fear of fire, or sabre-toothed tigers), because it’s within our control.

Recognising and controlling those unnecessary fears will free you up to achieve way more than you think you can.
